Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery can alleviate discomfort in the back, neck and shoulders caused by heavy breasts.

Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a transformative procedure designed to alleviate physical discomfort and improve overall quality of life for individuals experiencing the challenges of overly large breasts. Dr. Aaron Kearney offers a personalized approach to help patients achieve natural, balanced results.

Who Is a Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is ideal for individuals who experience physical or emotional distress due to excessively large breasts. Common concerns that lead patients to consider this procedure include:

  • Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain

  • Shoulder grooves from bra straps

  • Skin irritation or rashes beneath the breasts

  • Difficulty engaging in physical activities

  • Poor posture and musculoskeletal discomfort

  • Emotional distress, self-consciousness, or difficulty finding properly fitting clothing

Candidates for breast reduction should be in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Kearney will assess your unique needs and determine if breast reduction is the right choice for you.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes between 3 to 4 hours. It is an outpatient surgery. The procedure involves:

  1. Incisions – the most common incisions used are referred to as an anchor incision. This involves a circular incision around the areola, a vertical incision down to the breast crease, and a horizontal incision along the breast fold.

  2. Tissue Removal & Reshaping – Excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed to achieve a smaller, lifted, and more proportionate breast shape.

  3. Nipple Repositioning – The nipple-areolar complex is repositioned to a higher, more natural location while maintaining blood supply and sensation whenever possible.

  4. Closure & Recovery – Incisions are carefully closed with sutures, and surgical dressings are applied to promote healing. A supportive bra is provided to aid recovery.

Recovery and Healing Process

The recovery process varies for each patient, but here is a general timeline of what to expect:

  • First 48 Hours: You may experience mild to moderate discomfort, swelling, and bruising. Prescription or over-the-counter pain medication will be provided to manage discomfort.

  • First Week: Most patients can return to light activities within a few days but should avoid strenuous movements and lifting. A surgical bra should be worn to support healing.

  • 2 to 4 Weeks: Swelling and bruising gradually subside. You may resume normal activities, including non-strenuous work and social engagements.

  • 6 Weeks and Beyond: Strenuous exercise and lifting can typically resume. Final results continue to refine over the next few months as swelling completely resolves.

Dr. Kearney and our team provide detailed post-operative care instructions and support to ensure a smooth recovery.
